About the project

Through artificial lighting, light  is emitted and distributed into the environment. The project captures the emitted and reflected light through the technique of photography, and so to depict different situations of light sources, the path of light and its illumination. The associated photo project deals with the question around the right benefit of light. The aesthetic factor in the imagery should serve on the one hand as an eye catcher and on the other hand it reflects the actual problem that we humans simply see an enthusiasm, beauty and attraction in lights. With these facts in mind, the viewer can experience a scientific viewpoint, and experience the images again with this knowledge available to them. It is intended to encourage reflection on the question of which lights are useful, when and for how long, and to which degree of extension.

WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION ?

The word light pollution refers to the reduction of darkness by artificial light sources. Natural sources of light at night, such as the moon and stars, are obscured by light immissions from artificial lighting. As infrastructure grows worldwide, darkness is also rapidly disappearing. Light shines into the sky and is reflected by clouds, particles in the atmosphere and smog from large cities. So-called „skyglows“ or bells of light are created in a large radius around large cities. Light is thus used in such an inflationary manner that entire regions are indirectly brightened. The more light pollution, the greater the skyglow and the brightening in the area. Not only the energy required for this, but also the light itself has an impact on us and our environment.
